First Class Dining is First Class Loving a train as I do, this ride was a must for me when planning a trip to Colorado. We booked a stay in Cañon City for the sole purpose of riding this train, and as this would be a one time trip (from the UK), we did splurge on the First Class dining experience too.
We were somewhat concerned reading later reviews, but we'd already bought tickets and accommodation, so we were going no matter what.
We needn't have worried. It was a superb experience. Our table for two in the glass domed dining car was set with white linen, my reservation name and two chilled glasses of champagne. What a perfect start. The food was very good, as good as many fine dining static restaurant kitchens can deliver! We were served amuse bouche of crostini, iceberg wedge, osso bucco pork or braised short rib, and chocolate brownie and ice cream as the train made it's way through the spectacular scenery, following the river along the bottom of the gorge.
Before dessert, we stopped below the bridge and headed out to the open viewing deck to take in the views. The charming Michael was happy to provide photo tips and explain the history of the gorge as well as ensure the safety of the passengers. In our carriage, service by Jenna and Seth was super too. All the staff we met seemed genuinely determined to ensure guests had a wonderful experience aboard the train.
The glass domed carriage in which we dined was a little on the warm side, but given that the temperature was up to 37 degrees the air conditioning was doing its best! We were provided with iced water throughout the journey too.
I can't comment on the experiences in the other carriages, though the views would be just as awesome, but if you are considering dining on the Royal Gorge, I wholeheartedly recommend it. Cheers!
