Experience the true meaning of ‘moving pictures’!  Join celebrity guests such as Academy Award winner Cliff Robertson (“Charly”, “P.T. 109”, “Spider-Man”, “The Devil’s Brigade”) and Director Charles Matthau (son of screen legend Walter Matthau) on a unique ride on board the world’s only “Cinema Train” – a spectacular ride on a rolling movie theater along Colorado’s stunningly dramatic Royal Gorge with catered reception, live music by the Mountain Minstrels of Colorado, and special on-board screening of the rare 1906 silent film “From Leadville to Aspen: A Hold-Up in the Rockies” with live piano accompaniment, together with the Award-Winning short film “Travelin’ Trains”.  (see film descriptions below)

FROM LEADVILLE TO ASPEN: A HOLD-UP IN THE ROCKIES (1906)
Rare screening of the rare silent movie!  From the point of view of the front end of a train, a group of robbers on a handcar attempt a daring train robbery and murder one of its crew.  Shot documentary-style showing the countryside and small towns as the train travels through them, this was actually a genre of film at the time dubbed “Phantom Tourism” where locations were filmed from a moving vehicle.  Look closely… the locations may not be what they seem!  (with live piano accompaniment).  Running time: 8 min.  Black & white.

TRAVELIN’ TRAINS (1988)
This award-winning short film is the story of Sam Unterman, a young man in search of his father, a legendary blues musician known as "The Snowman," in depression-era Georgia, and the blues music that both united and separated him from his search. The truth to the railroad warning that "hobo legends ain't the same as book legends," becomes painfully clear to young Sam in his journey through the music of a generation living the blues.  “Travelin’ Trains is like a William Faulkner paragraph: profound, sententious, dense, psychologically heavy..."  says The Boston Phoenix, and the Village Voice states  "Eric Mofford's ‘Travelin' Trains’ does wonders in a mere half-hour with a primal theme; the search for the father...the hobo camp scenes are Rembrandtesque on a shoestring.  Mofford is clearly a filmmaker of considerable promise." Running time: 28 min.  Rating: PG-13

about the
INDEPENDENCE FILM FEST OF COLORADO

Dubbed “Colorado’s feisty new film festival!” by The Denver Post, the Independence Film Fest of Colorado (IFFC) is unique in that it’s the highest film festival in the world and the only major international film festival founded, run and programmed by award-winning veteran filmmakers and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.  Established in 2007, the IFFC is based in the historic mountain towns of Leadville, Buena Vista, and Salida along Colorado’s breathtaking Arkansas River Valley.  The Second Edition will take place Sept. 3 – 7, expanding statewide this year to include events in Grand Junction Sept. 12 – 14, and Pueblo Sept. 26 – 28.

Founded, organized, and programmed by director Lawrence David Foldes and producer/former child star Victoria Paige Meyerink, the events focus on Hollywood’s 60s to 80s golden era of substance, story, and character-driven films. Westword recently awarded the IFFC “Best Undiscovered Film Festival” and placed it on its list of Best Colorado Events in 2008. The Colorado Tourism Office recently selected the IFFC as the only film festival to represent Colorado at its major tourism expo in New York City.

The royal gorge route railroad

Considered to be one of the nation’s most scenic railroads, the Royal Gorge Route offers an intimate way to experience the spectacular Royal Gorge. The train features six classes of service ranging from coach and vista dome, to wine express, lunch, dinner, and murder mystery trains. The train travels alongside the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge more than 1,000 feet beneath the canyon’s rim.

The first train to traverse the Royal Gorge was on May 7, 1879, making it Colorado’s oldest scenic railroad. Guests of the railroad experience the elegance and nostalgia of a classic 1950s-style train and the opportunity to view the breathtaking scenery of the Royal Gorge in one of the glass-topped vista domes. Trains run daily on a two-hour round trip at from May 24th through October 14th at: 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM with dinner, murder mystery and wine dinner trains available on select evenings throughout the season. Reservations can be made by calling the historic Royal Gorge Route Railroad at 719.276.4000, 1.888.724.5748, or online at RoyalGorgeRoute.com.
